What are the requirements of being a club advisor?

• Eligible advisors must have two years of experience at ASU and currently be in the role of professor, teaching professor or clinical professor at ASU (including: professor, associate professor, assistant professor, clinical professor, clinical associate professor, clinical assistant professor, teaching professor, teaching associate professor, or teaching assistant professor).
• Connect student clubs to the university by creating unified and inclusive experiences.
• Actively guide students through various opportunities to develop emerging leaders and their leadership qualities.
• Serve as a bridge between students and the appropriate university resources to provide students with overall support.
• Seek to improve and influence the overall welfare and well-being of each student and student club.

Below are some expectations that will make for a successful club advisor:

• Communication: Being available and responsive to club officer communications through agreed-upon channels (Slack, email, phone, Zoom, etc). Communication with student organizations/clubs to determine overall event success and learnings to utilize as guides for future events.
• Attending Meetings: Actively participating with the club leadership. This may include general body meetings, executive board meetings and more as agreed upon.
• Attending Events: Partnering with your student club to plan safe and productive events. 

What is the time commitment of being a club advisor?

The time commitment varies by organization. There is not a required number of hours each work in a given week. Time commitment will depend on the needs of the organization. Asking the organization for a calendar of meetings and events will provide a good idea of what the time commitment will be.

It is also highly recommended that club advisors speak with their student leadership during the renewal process about the needs of the club and what the time commitment may look like throughout the year.

A student leader/advisor agreement is provided in the advisor hub to help identify availability, goals, etc. for students and the advisor. This is not a requirement, but simply a resource that may help guide conversations about expectations.

How does being a club advisor benefit both the club and ASU?

Serving as a club advisor is a unique opportunity to mentor students and support students’ passions outside of the virtual classroom. Advisors gain skills related to coaching, navigating challenges and learning how to support the development of students. They can help students in their understanding of ASU policy and the ASU charter.

How long is my term as a club advisor?

Club renewal is annual, and during the re-registration process club advisor terms are reviewed. Terms for club advisors are based on each individual club’s constitution and the needs of the group at the time.

It is highly recommended that club advisors work closely with clubs during leadership transitions to assess advising needs.

Is there training for advisors? 

Yes. Completing advisor training is mandatory and annual. Advisor (and officer) trainings for student organizations can be located in the 'My Checklists’ section of the Sun Devil Central left-side navigation menu.
